How to Kill Mold with Ammonia

When using ammonia to kill mold, be sure to wear protective gloves, eye wear and an approved breathing mask as ammonia will produce harmful off gases. Like bleach, ammonia will only effectively work on non porous surfaces like tiles, porcelain, glass or metal. Porous surfaces like wood or drywall only allow water into the pores (where mold hides). This gives the mold he moisture it needs to grow.

CAUTION: Never mix ammonia with bleach. The combination of the two produces a highly toxic chemical off gas That can be detrimental to your health.

Before you start any mold  removal project, be sure to pick up protective gear and equipment in order to avoid any mold related health problems.

Instructions

  1. Start by creating a 50/50 solution of clear ammonia and water. It is important to use “clear ammonia” so be sure to check the label for this.
  2. Spray the solution directly onto the moldy surface and let it sit for a few hours. This gives the solution time to saturate the mold. DO NOT spray the solution onto a cloth or sponge and wipe the mold. This only sends the mold sores airborne allowing them to grow elsewhere in your home.
  3. After the solution has sat for a few hours, wipe the moldy surface clean using water and a throwaway cloth or sponge.
  4. To help with drying and air ventilation, keep a window or door open.

Disclaimer: Mold is a very serious and can be very damaging to your health. Unless you are certain that the type of mold you are dealing with is non toxic, you should never attempt to remove it yourself. A certified mold inspector can tell you the type of mold you have.
